Russian Knapweed

Acroptilon Repens

Russian Knapweed is a creeping perennial forming dense colonies as a result of buds from its black, spreading roots.  It can reach a height of up to 4 feet and is commonly seen along roadways throughout the Western US.  Its roots can extend 25 feet deep into the soil, making it very difficult to remove and eradicate, while it can easily out-compete other native plant species.  It is known to cause chewing disease in horses.  Russian Knapweed is characterized by its cone shaped pink-to lavender colored flower heads and papery-rounded floral bracts.
